This juvenile Japanese Macaque is one of the infamous 'hot-springs bathing' monkeys living in the snowy mountains of Japan. This young monkey was photographed in Jigokudani Yaen Koen, a wildlife preserve near Yudanaka Onsen, Japan. From Yudanaka Onsen, the hot springs are about a 1-hour hike through a snow-filled evergreen forest.
*The town of Yudanaka Onsen itself is lovely. Among the memorable stops there was a delicious 'Chankonabe' for dinner - this is the traditional highly nutritious stew eaten by Sumo wrestlers, and the owner was such a tremendous Sumo fan that we left with a printed schedule of all matches for the season.
